More Than Math

Based on the book More Than Counting, we will explore hands on, home made activites to promote math skills. Learn about the different math concepts children need to know to do well in school and how to design math games. Examine your role as the teacher in a whole-math environment. Bring scissors, markers and 6 file folders.

Using Music to Support Literacy

Children should have opportunities to sing, listen to music, and respond to music throughout the day. You will acquire strategies for supporting literacy with musical activities throughout the day; and, learn how to support children?s expressive and receptive language development by creating new words and themes for familiar songs.

The Creative Curriculum for Family Child Care- Please note this is training for Family Child Care ONLY. PL

CDA 2, CC II

Organization is key to providing flexible and age-appropriate home environments for quality family child care. This class shows how to plan appropriate activities with mixed-age groups in a variety of interest areas ranging from cooking to outdoor play. Participants will gain important tools for organization, communication, and planning including safety checklists, a sample daily schedule, equipment lists, and sample letters to parents. In addition to participating in class, individuals taking this class will complete an additional application assignment. Must attend all sessions to receive credit.

Growth and Development PL

CDA 8, CC I

Explore growth and development from birth to five. Learn how to enhance and stimulate physical and cognitive development, and foster communication and creativity skills in children. You can choose to take this class for in-service hours OR, for only $25 per credit, for one college credit through Metropolitan State University. This course will total 10 contact/in-service hours and consists of four 2.5-hour sessions. In addition to participating in class, individuals taking this class will complete an additional application assignment. Must attend all sessions to receive credit.

Burnout

Participants will understand burnout and how it affects our performance. Each of the 12 stages of burnout will be explained, and alternatives for each stage will be shared. We will address preventative techniques, as well as alternatives for those who feel their burnout cycle is escalating.

Effective Lesson Planning

CDA 2 or 5

All Teachers can use help in the department of trying to plan an effective yet fun lesson for the children in their care. Here we study the format of a widely known and used curriculum called 'Creative Curriculum'. Together we will come up with child focused lessons that will be exciting yet designed to aide in the growth of the whole child, covering areas that will ensure developmentally appropriate planning. Also, we will study how assessment and observation with environment planning will help in the effectiveness of one?s curriculum.

Communicating With Parents

Communicating with parents is an essential and challenging issue for day care providers. This interactive workshop will provide practical tools for effective parent-provider communication, including relationship building, conflict resolution and ways to deal with child behavior problems.

Health and Safety 101

Healthy child care is everyone?s business! This training will brush up your skills on proper hand washing, correct diapering techniques, and sanitation practices. These techniques will help to keep your environment healthy for you and your children.

Introducing the Program for Infant-Toddler Caregivers (PITC) as Parent Aware Curriculum -PL

CDA 2 , CC II

This training is for caregivers to identify, practice, and apply PITC caregiving behaviors with infants and toddlers. While PITC includes much more than eight hours of content participants will satisfy the Parent Aware requirement as they gain practice in four primary areas: Building relationships through responsive care; using routines as curriculum; facilitating learning and development (uses Minnesota Birth-3 Indicators of Progress); and, planning curriculum that meets individual needs. This series of four 2-hour sessions uses video observation, everyday situations, reflection, and practical decision-making so that caregivers can go back in between sessions and use PITC strategies in their own child care settings. In addition to participating in class, individuals taking this class will complete an additional application assignment. Must attend all sessions to receive credit.
